Yesterday the whole school visited cineworld to see the film Home.
We really enjoyed the film and Nasim has written a brief synopsis below.
After a hive-minded alien race called the Boov conquer the Earth, they relocate the planet’s human population — all except for a little girl named Tip (Rihanna), who’s managed to hide from the aliens. When Tip meets a fugitive Boov called Oh (Jim Parsons), there’s mutual distrust. However, Oh is not like his comrades; he craves friendship and fun. As their distrust fades, the pair set out together to find Tip’s mother, but, unbeknown to them, the Gorg — enemies of the Boov — are en route.
The film helped us think about fitting in and the importance of friendship. It will help us with our work on anti-bullying week later in the term.

Today a team of 9 children (mixed Year 5 and 6) visited Green Lane to take part in the first debate of the year. It was against Dixon’s Manningham and Green Lane were judging the competition. The topic for debate was, ”Should school holidays be abolished, agree or disagree. We drew straws and were told we must agree with the statement. At first the team were disappointed, as they all disagreed with the statement. Yet this was a valuable skill learnt because you often have to say things that you may not always agree with. The children were given 10 minutes to gather their ideas then the debate began. Impressively, the children had to stand up and raise their point in a formal, concise way. Green Lane judges were impressed with the range of vocabulary used, the confidence and clarity of the voice, the passion shown in the responses and also the way that the children were able to argue back against a comment made by the opposition. It was an emphatic victory for the team. The children were delighted and cannot wait for the next debate when we will be hosting Green Lane and Dixon’s Maningham.
